Master Bedroom Design for Cantasita

Even before I designed the floor plan for Cantasita (yes, we named our house) I found this photo of a master bedroom design and it became my inspiration. I just love the simple elegance of this room!

While I do love damask, the brown & white damask used in the drapes and pillows was too dark for my taste. The key elements I wanted to incorporate were: the white bed, the artwork arrangement, wood beams, the chandelier and bedside chests with lamps.

We didn’t want a grandiose sized master bedroom and opted for a more modest size. Overall the room is 15′ x 20′. It’s comfortably sized while still allowing egress for a possible future walker or wheelchair. Placing the master bedroom on the first floor was also part of my aging in place design.

Flanking the fireplace are built-in floor-to-ceiling dressers/cabinets. The bottom parts are drawers that will function as our dressers. Above that are cabinets. One cabinet will hold a TV and the other has shelves for storage. It made a lot more sense to have built-ins rather than trying to find furniture to fit the space!

Since Cantasita is a California Spanish design, I wanted to add a little Spanish flair to the room with the fireplace. I sent this photo to our builder to replicate in our bedroom. However, building code required the hearth to be 20″ so it sticks out a little more into the room than I would have liked. Oh well. I’m going to hang one of my favorite pieces of art over it – “Breakfast in Bed” by Sue Macartney-Snape.

Master Bedroom Design – Fabrics

In my inspiration photo, the brown and white damask was the key element around which the room was designed. For my key fabric I wanted something lighter & brighter that would tie into the other colors of the house plus bring the outdoors in. This fabric will be used for the drapes with the beaded trim along the leading edge. It will also be used for 2 king shams on the bed. Instead of the brown euro shams and folded coverlet, I’m going with green.

I will be using this coordinating fabric for a pillow on the chaise.

Master Bedroom Design – Lighting

For the chandelier I went with the Salento 6 Light Chandelier in Persian White by Quorum International. I got a great deal on it because I bought it through Lamps Plus Open Box! If you haven’t shopped on this site you’re missing out! I checked it several times a day when I was buying light fixtures for Cantasita.

I bought two of the Isabella table lamps by Forty West Designs for the bedside chests.

Master Bedroom Furniture

For the beside chests the Restoration Hardware St. James collection really appeals to me. It has the rustic charm I love without being shabby or over-the-top faux finished. I don’t like matchy-matchy so I want the closed 32″ nightstand for me and the open 32″ nightstand for Sir CB.

The bed will be placed on the wall opposite the fireplace. I found a local place that will custom make upholstered headboards and beds at a very reasonable price. Because I want a creamy shade of white to work with our existing ivory coverlet, I’m reluctant to order online. I am leaning towards having an upholstered bed rather than just a headboard + bedskirt. Any thoughts?

Along the wall as you walk in, I’ll be putting a small chaise. We needed some sort of seating for putting on our shoes and other than in bed reading. A bench just didn’t look right and I was concerned about 2 chairs sticking out too much. Sir CB brilliantly suggested a “fainting couch” which is a chaise in the 21st century . I found this one and it’s the perfect size for the wall AND has storage!

A Rug for the Master Bedroom Design

I chose this rug because it worked with my fabric. Normally I choose a rug first because you have a more limited selection in rugs than you do in fabrics. Alas I fell in love with the fabric first. This 9 x 13 wasn’t expensive but I always like to save money if I can. The rug I found was by Artistic Weavers and was available on various sites for the same price. On a whim I checked Overstock and found it listed under the parent brand Surya. Lo and behold it was on sale and less than half the price of anywhere else!! It pays to shop around!

Master Bedroom DesignI’m so happy with the master bedroom design! It fulfills our current needs and those that we may have in the future. Plus the colors and patterns make my heart sing!

Look for upcoming posts with my designs for other rooms!
